Teach Yourself How to Sing - Follow Your Passion!

Learning how to sing, despite popular belief, is a skill just like learning a musical instrument. Many people think that either you are born to sing or you aren't implying that singing is a genetic trait like blond hair or blue eyes. The fact is that professional singers work very hard and spend years developing their voice in a style that is their own. If you want to learn to sing or improve your singing abilities you've got to start at the beginning. It seems obvious, but many people fail to realize it. If you were planning on learning the guitar, you wouldn't put a Jimmy Hendrix song in front of yourself and expect to be able to play it after a few tries, would you? You would have to start with the basics and work your way up to the more difficult material. The same is true with singing; you've got to start with the basics and work your way through the process step by step.

For professional singers, the act of singing is not an accident. Some opera singers work for 25 or 30 years to develop the voice they long for. Many popular musical artists start singing when they are 8 or 9 years old and never look back. However, becoming a better singer later in life is possible with a little guidance. If you have a passion for singing, that's enough to start with, but to continue that passion you will want to be able to notice an improvement over time. That's why pursuing singing lessons, either alone or with an instructor, is essential to improving and developing your own unique voice.

There are a few elements to singing that non-singers don't see. One important element is breath support. Good singers want to increase their lung capacity by exercising their lungs and staying away from smoke or other harmful inhalants that can diminish the lung's elasticity. The next step is to begin breathing deep and holding notes for as long as you can (without pushing yourself to feeling like you might pass out, although this might happen the first couple of times you undertake this exercise). Do this often and in repetitions like lifting weights. Instructors have many other exercises you can do to increase your breath support. Another element to developing your voice is working your vocal chords. Everyone has a natural range, but everyone who works on it can improve their range greatly. You will amaze yourself after working on your range because one day, without even thinking about it, you will hit that high note that you never thought you could reach.
